Does a Magic Mushroom Microdose Really Work?
The microdose champignon once associated with the hippies of the 1970s is now being used by people of all walks of life to improve focus and creativity. The practice, known as microdosing, involves taking small doses of the drug psilocybin, or magic mushrooms. A typical microdose is around a tenth of a recreational dose and doesn’t cause hallucinations. It’s been shown to boost mood and reduce anxiety, according to some research.
But despite all the positive buzz, concrete evidence on whether or not magic mushroom microdose works is sparse. A January 2021 study found existing evidence is “inconclusive” and that a placebo effect may be at play. That doesn’t mean that people aren’t finding relief, though. A 2019 study on psychedelic-assisted therapy showed that it can help ease depression in certain patients.
The Science Behind the Glow: Microdosing Magic Mushrooms for Enhanced Mood
For many, the idea of a natural treatment for depression that doesn’t involve drugs is enticing. And while it’s not a replacement for existing treatments if it can help people find a new outlook on life, then it’s worth considering, experts say.
But it’s important to remember that magic mushrooms are still illegal. They contain the psychedelic compound psilocybin, which is federally classified as a Schedule I substance, meaning it has a high risk for abuse. Although a microdose of mushrooms is unlikely to make you high or experience any hallucinations, law enforcement still sees it as a drug and arrests anyone caught with the substance, especially if they’re caught with large quantities.
