Digital image format JPEG XL is the latest and greatest from the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG). Sneyers, who is the creator of the libjxl library used in Chrome to support JPEG XL, wrote a blog post this week touting its benefits. JPEG XL is “designed to offer both lossy and lossless compression in harmony, with progressive decoding for speed,” he writes. “The result is a significant reduction in file size at equivalent subjective quality, and a highly efficient coding architecture.”

It’s not just for web delivery, either. JPEG XL is also meant as a capture format with a wide range of features for printing use cases, such as named layers, selection masks and multiple alpha channels. It also includes support for CMYK and spot colors.

Sneyers isn’t the only one who’s singing its praises. Several companies are already supporting the new image format, including the e-commerce platform Shopify and internet infrastructure company Cloudinary. The Alliance for Open Media’s AVIF, which Google supports through its Chrome and Firefox browsers, is another option. It’s a photo format offshoot of the AV1 video codec that’s royalty free, supports HDR and gets a boost from modern processor cores.
