Accessible Units for Weddings & Festivals

Inclusion is not a checklist item that can be checked off once an event is complete; it’s an ongoing process of thoughtfully thinking through and providing opportunities for all attendees to participate. As such, venues, Portable bathroom rental, and organizers need to create environments where accessibility is a central component of the planning process, rather than an afterthought.

For most disabled folks, access isn’t something they can simply take for granted. From the moment they arrive at an event to the moment they leave, people with disabilities face a variety of barriers that can make it challenging to fully enjoy their day. This includes physical barriers like inaccessible buildings, unsafe paths and walkways, and a lack of directional signage. Other barriers include a lack of accessible transportation options and accommodations for dietary restrictions or allergies.

To prevent these barriers, organizers need to ensure that all aspects of an event are accessible to individuals with disabilities. This article focuses on creating an accessible route from the public transit stop or private vehicle drop-off point to the site entrance (Figure 10). If the main entry is not accessible, consider whether ramp rentals are possible.

It is also helpful to clearly mark a pedestrian route across the entire event site, particularly where it crosses vehicular traffic lanes and parking spaces. Signage can be done in a variety of ways, from marking the path with chalk or aerosol spray paint to using ropes and stanchions to block off roads or areas. In addition, if an event is located on public sidewalks, make sure there are curb cuts to allow wheelchair users to travel safely.
